El Panecillo

El Panecillo is located 3,000 meters above sea level, with a privileged view of the historic center, north and south of Quito, making it the most important viewpoint in the city.

At the top of the hill of El Panecillo, baptized with this name for its resemblance to a small bread; There is the representation of the only winged virgin, also known as the Virgin of Quito. It is a replica of the sculpture by the Quito artist Bernardo de Legarda, made up of 7,000 pieces of aluminum.

In addition, in this sector you can find a vestige of the Inca period such as the Olla del Panecillo, a kind of circular cistern eight meters deep, which was used to irrigate crops during Spanish rule and was later used as a defense site for colonial troops during the libertarian battle of Pichincha, on May 24, 1822.
